Is It Safe to Buy a Used Car in Panama? A Foreigner's Guide to Avoiding Scams
It's the number-one worry we hear from newcomers: "How do I buy a car here without getting ripped off?" It's a fair question. Buying privately in a country you don't know yet, in a language you may not speak, is genuinely risky. The good news: once you know the traps, they're easy to avoid.
The real risks when buying a used car in Panama
- Hidden debts and liens. In Panama, unpaid fines (multas) and outstanding loans can stay attached to the vehicle. Buy the wrong car privately and you can inherit someone else's debt before you can register it.
- Title not in the seller's name. Some sellers don't actually own the car free and clear, which can stall or block the transfer (traspaso).
- Odometer rollback. Mileage tampering is harder to catch on a private sale with no records.
- "Curbstoners". Unlicensed flippers who pose as private owners and disappear after the sale.
- Cash-now pressure. "Another buyer is coming, pay today" — designed to stop you from doing your homework.
How to protect yourself
- Confirm the title is clean and in the seller's name before any money changes hands.
- Check for outstanding debts and fines tied to the plate/vehicle with the transit authority (ATTT) and municipality.
- Get an independent mechanical inspection.
- Never pay in full before the transfer is guaranteed.
- Buy from an established dealer that transfers a clean title and stands behind the car.
So — is it safe?
Buying privately can be risky for a newcomer. Buying from a reputable dealer that guarantees a clean, debt-free title is safe and straightforward. The difference is who carries the risk: you, or the dealer.
