Car Insurance in Panama: What Every Expat Needs to Know (2026)

Before you drive off, you need to understand one thing: in Panama, car insurance isn't optional. Here's the plain-English version of what's required, what it costs, and how to get covered as an expat.

Is car insurance mandatory in Panama?

Yes. Panamanian law requires every vehicle on the road to carry third-party liability insurance — locally the Seguro Obligatorio de Accidentes de Tránsito. It exists so that if you cause an accident, there's coverage for the injuries and damage to other people and their property.

Drive uninsured at your own risk: if you're in an accident without a valid policy, authorities can withhold your driver's license and hold the vehicle until you produce proper documentation. Policies are also required to run for a minimum term (commonly three months).

Two levels of coverage

  • Third-party liability (the legal minimum). Covers damage and injury you cause to others — not your own car.
  • Full / comprehensive coverage. Adds protection for your own vehicle: collision, theft, fire, and more. Strongly recommended on a newer or higher-value car.

What does it cost?

As a rough guide reported in recent years, third-party coverage on an older sedan can run in the neighborhood of ~$500/year, while full coverage is often closer to ~$900/year — varying with the car's value, year, your profile, and the insurer. Treat these as ballpark figures and get a current quote for your specific car.

How expats get insured

You'll need the vehicle details and your identification. Coverage is widely available through Panamanian insurers and brokers, and a good dealer can point you in the right direction so you're road-legal from day one.

How Champion helps: we deliver your car with a clean title and registration in your name, and we'll guide you on getting the mandatory insurance sorted so there are no gaps. Ask us when you buy — in English.

The bottom line

Insurance in Panama is mandatory, affordable, and easy to arrange once you know the rules. Get at least the legal third-party minimum — and consider full coverage to protect your investment.
